Toll Free 800 Service FAQ
Q. What numbers are toll free?
Toll free numbers (at this time) start with 800, 888, 877 or 866.
Q. Will I get a new phone line with my toll free number?
No. A toll free call is routed to a ring to number that already exists.
Q. What is a ring to number?
The ring to number is the regular phone number that will receive the toll free calls.
Q. Who is the responsible organization?
They are the company that sold you the toll free number. They keep track of billing and route the call
to your ring to number.
Q. Is toll free billing the same for all calls?
That depends on the policies of the responsible organization handling your service. Often times the
calls originating out of state are billed at your state-to-state rate and calls originating within your state
are billed at that sometimes-different rate. It's important to know where your calls will most often originate
and find a plan best for your situation.
Q. Do calls originating from a payphone cost more?
Yes. Regulations where passed to allow the owner of the payphone to collect a fee from the responsible
organization for the usage of their phone. These fees average 35¢ to 50¢ per call and sometimes more. This fee
is in addition to your per minute billing.
Q. Is having a toll free number expensive?
Not really. There are many plans available that charge the same as your out going long distance
charges. So the call will cost the same as if you called the person instead. One thing to keep in mind is
that people are more likely to call your toll free number vs. your regular number. So the per minute charges
are the same but there is a good chance that there will be more minutes used for the month.
Q. Can toll free numbers be used from out side of the US?
No. Foreign telephone companies are not set-up to recognize our toll free system. Some large companies
(usually phone card companies) may have special arrangements to allow their cards to work but this is outside
the scope of the average toll free user.
Q. What about Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Puerto Rico and the USVI?
Some plans allow these locations or allow you to accept or deny calls from these locations. It depends on the
carrier.
Q. Do toll free calls originating from Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Puerto Rico or the USVI cost more?
Most of the time they do. Again it depends on your provider. If you expect calls from these locations find
a provider that can handle them for the lowest rate.
Q. I already have a toll free number but I found a cheaper plan. Can I change and keep the same number?
Yes you can. After applying for service you will need to fill out a RESPORG identifying your old responsible
organization and toll free number and fax or mail it to your new responsible organization. This can't be done on
line. The new responsible organization needs a signed hard copy.
Q. Do I need to fill out a RESPORG for a new toll free number?
No. This process is much easier and can be done on line at the same time you apply for service.
Q. Does my phone line need to be a business line to get a toll free number?
No. Anybody can have a toll free number.
